In October I adopted a dog from the post shelter; I named her LoLa. Several people have told me she is a Mountain Feist. I am curious because at first I thought she may be Rat Terrier or Jack Russell, but the descriptions we not a match for her. The…

Carolyn,
About a year ago I lost my Basenji (he died.) I hadn't thought about getting a new dog until this past October. I truly only went to the shelter to look, but I ended up taking a pooch home. At first glance, LoLa visually resembles Basenjis, but not fully. I figured her to be a Basenji, terrier mix. I later found out that she is a Mountain (Treeing) Feist.
I absolutely adore her!!! They can be very great dogs, but ALL breeds have dogs that are not for certain families. We also have a Labrador and as a pup she was a handful. My LoLa is on the smaller side of the type, the Mountain Feist is not a breed, but a type. She is only 12 LBS, but she is a pistol!!! There is little info on the internet on Mountain Feists, but form what I read, they make great pets, or hunting dogs. I originally wanted a Basenji, but I got LoLa and I wouldn't trade her for anything. Good thing for me both the Basenji and Mountain Feists have high energy levels, as well as Labs. I had necer heard of the Feist either until someone told me her type. My little LoLa is extremly intelligent, loves to run and lay, and gets garbage out of the can without knocking it over. We used to blame that on our Lab until she got caught, still I don't know how she managed when the can was mostly empty. We now move the can when we leave to avoid temptaions. LoLa is also very snuggly, she loves to play, but when she is tired she wants to sleep right next to me. (LOVE IT)
I hope this helps, I haven't had any real problems with her, but sometimes she gets out and runs, runs, runs...... (Basenjis do this also, so I have had practice.) Walking her is sometimes fun, she is a squirrel dog and we live in Louisiana, so she is constantly tracking during her walks.

Mary Ann,
How do you like your Feist? I often look into breeds I've not heard of & this was one. Some guy wanted to breed his in the area & wondered if anyone had one. So I started looking around. I like to read about dog breeds. I have a rat terrier/heeler mix & a sheba Inu/chow mix myself. I grew up with a border collie & my 15 yr old I lost 3 yrs. ago was a heeler/besengi mix. I loved that dog!!!!!!! Some are just like your own flesh & blood! I have 4 cats also. Love em all!
