If the dog is a pure bred and she makes the mistake of giving the new owners the papers that prove it then they can use the documents or sell them to a puppy mill. Most rescue people know about this. Some people adopt dogs to get the papers.

How will she know if the new owners license the dog within 30 days? I have never given a dog away but I have adopted many and placed many dogs. I would never do so without a contract or bill of sale in writing. However, my primary concern is the health and safety of the dogs.

Oh gosh thank you for the quick feedback Beth. The dog IS fixed as well. But forgive me when i ask, what does "akc" stand for? I am not familiar with those acronyms. I was advised to transfer ownership as far as having the dog re-licensed by new owner within 30 days of home transfer by someone else. My friend would not be able to offer the dog be returned to her because she has an international career now, hence painfully giving up the puppy is so emotionally stressing for her--But thank you for the info.

Mrs. Davila, One important thing to do is to destroy the dogs akc papers if it has them. Also, do the right thing and make sure the dog is spayed or neutered before it is adopted.
Since your friend seems to be concerned with legal responsibility she can make up a bill of sale and have the new owners sign it. If she actually cares about the dog she can indicate on the contract that the dog should be returned to her if the new owners decide not to keep it. Otherwise, we can only hope this dog is going to a better home where someone will love it forever.

Hello pet lovers! I have a scenario that hopefully someone here would actually know what to do. I am helping a friend give her puppy away to a new home...is there anything my friend needs to do as far as legally? I already told her to give them the vaccination papers (in which) is up to date and dog license on the collar. What i really want to know is, does my friend have to call the licensing place (or anything else) to change the name to the NEW owners? My friend is afraid that if the dog does something ( for example, bite someone)... can she get into trouble since all the paperwork is still in her name??? I think this is a legitimate concern to have. I hope someone is knowledgeable enough to give me feedback on this matter, thank you very much everyone.

In October I adopted a dog from the post shelter; I named her LoLa. Several people have told me she is a Mountain Feist. I am curious because at first I thought she may be Rat Terrier or Jack Russell, but the descriptions we not a match for her. The only description that matches is Mountain Feist. I am hoping someone ca help; it doesn't matter, she is a GREAT dog. I would just like to understand her more; everyday is a new day with LoLa. She is a character.

Hi Carolyn,
I have only met two Feists in my life and they were different in appearance. One looked like a Jack or a Parsons and the other looked like a Fox Terrier crossed with a Bull Terrier.

Both were nice dogs and were used to hunt for food but were also family pets.

They were bred in the mountains as small hunting dogs that go to tree. If you like Jacks and enjoy a dog with lots of energy you might like them. I wouldn't recommend them for a first time dog owner but a terrier person (especially one that likes to hunt ) would be a good owner.

I have a two West Highland Terriers. Mercedes has blackened skin, I've used the fungus medication and it's not working? What is it? Now Sweet Pea has a patch? I tried to look it up on the internet but did not find any information that seemed to fit. I give her for itchy skin, brewer yeast, biotin, benedryl?

Never Give to Bedlington Terriers. These are two brands of Canine Birth Control now available. They are also used to treat false pregnancies, so ask about it if you have a Bedlington Terrier with a false pregnancy and do not give it to your dog. Ovaban-Brand name Generic name: Megestrol Acetate & Cheque Drops (brand name), Generic name: Mibolerone. These two medications are never to be used on Bedlington Terriers. It is a birth control for female dogs now available. They will soon have a dog food laced with Birth Control medication to be sold in store also. I am working on two blogs soon to be listed soon about: Canine Birth Control Information & Myths, exaggerations, complications regarding Spay/Neutering your dog. I am almost done with both will have all the details soon about it. It will list all the information I could find on it. Put it into simple language for us lay people. I hope it will help a lot with the Shelter Dog's Plight, but also save lives by unnecessary complications due to these surgeries. Ranging from complications from the surgery itself, to benefits and health problems related to them so an informed decision can finally be made.
