I would really like to know if anyone knows if any birth control is available for female dogs? It would save a lot of Shelter Dogs from being downed.

I know that if birth control was available for my female dogs? I would buy it! Does anyone know if it is yet? Is it in the works? If it could be available why isn't it? Spaying a female dog is very expensive and even with "free" clinic's etc. it's not enough, fast enough. Also open abdominal surgery is high risk. There are complications, deaths, infections, etc. What are the stats on how many die a year? They open the full abdominal cavity, and remove both "horns," (Uterus). Why can't we buy it at Wal-mart for example? Doesn't the problem of too many dead dogs merit it? Or special interest groups stopping it from coming to market? Mercedes had a horrible experience. Bloody urine, severe pain, unable to walk without whimpering. If it were woman we'd have a product ASAP! They're dying for goodness sake? They're are shot's after an accidental "Hook up." But if you don't see them mate? You've got a pregnancy. Our adopted dogs have come from others that could not keep their dogs or Shelters on the cats. Annie's accidental litter after a dog sitter accidentally allowed a lock up. Puppies are Dixie's accidental lock up Both dogs went into heat while we were away on a family emergency. Snowball our shelter cat.

I agree. As it is very hard to get an animal to swallow a pill, maybe it could be made as a food. I think that you raise a great point. I saw a cat that had an abnormal stomache sag, and i was informed that it was an accident from a spaying surgery. These surgeries are fatal. My mother had a cat die (although it was male, it still was killed as a result of anesthesia at to young of an age.) during a surgery.

I have never considered birth control for dogs, but that would be very convenient! Especially for breeders who want better control on birth schedules

I am sorry to hear about these horrible unfortanate experinces and yes complications can occur as they do in any type of surgery ,but spaying and neutering is the best way to keep down the pet population . We have over 350 puppies ,juniors, to adult dogs at the Humane Society of Grand Bahama now, with the help of volunteer vets from New Mexico, our vet with the free spay & neuter to the public ,we are trying to reach our goal of education and controling the pet population.
Birth control I dont see working sorry to say plus this would be an extra expense ;that people wont pay either.
